Something Old and Something New

There was a lot about the 12-inning loss to the Yankees last night that looked like the same song we’ve heard for a long time. There we were – over and over hoping for someone to get a hit at a key moment and WIN THE STINKIN’ GAME! But the Birds could only muster 6 hits in 12 innings, and they were 0 for 8 with RISP.

But on the other hand, there was something new in the person of a new starter who deserved a better fate. There were only two earned runs from what really is a powerful NY lineup. And the bullpen only gave up the one single run in the 12th inning.

But back to the first hand – there is still something old in Mark Reynolds committing another error, that, along with 15 strikeouts and the 0-8 in critical situations, gave the game away after extending it along with the bullpen.

But again, on the other hand, the 2011 Orioles would not likely have hung around for 12 innings and scrapped like crazy to win the game. They would have rolled over after the Yanks came back and tied it 4-4.  The Yankees were themselves only 2 for 18 with RISP.

I suggest you right now link over to my sports network blog at BirdsWatcher.com, where I today posted a piece on the major questions the Orioles need to get answered between now and Memorial Day.  Here is the link: http://birdswatcher.com/2012/04/11/questions-for-the-first-weeks-of-the-season/
